A small Island, but a new world to discover through memorable activities
Antiquities
The Church of Panagia is the largest one on the island. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and built on a rock above Chora. The items used for its construction probably belong to an ancient temple since you can see ancient inscriptions and sculptures around and inside the church. There is a marble inscription dated back to 1687, which refers to the renovation of the temple. The church took on its current form during the restoration that began in 1816 and was completed in 1821. The Assumption of Virgin Mary that can be seen in the church is linked to pirate stories and legends of Folegandros. According to an old custom of Folegandros, the icon is carried around every house of the island at Easter.
Paliokastro -The ancient citadel of the island north of the Church of Panagia
Chrysospilia -Accessible only by boat
Cemetery of Chora -Part of the ancient wall
Kastellos -small rocky peninsula in St George
The Churches Agia Eleousa - Agia Sophia - Pantanasa (in the Castle of Folegandros)
Among the wild beauty and the scattered rocks you can find dozens of white chapels
that adorn the slopes of the island and can be reached by following one of the many
trails.
Settlements
Chora, is located at approximately 3 km west of the harbor ( Karavostassis) and is one of the most representative and beautiful Cycladic Villages. The unique element
of Chora are the consecutive squares, which you will find nestled between the white houses and the whitewashed streets. Higher up, at the edge of the cliff, lies the Castle Area, a small castle-village that enjoys breathtaking view of the rest of the island.
The other settlements of the island are Karavostassis, which is the main port, Pano Meria, the second largest and the main agricultural village, where houses are scattered around . There are also 2 other agricultural settlements, Petousi and Livadi, surviving the past times. Agali is the newest on the island and mainly is a holiday resort.
Activities
Here you can find a variety of beaches and small coves with crystal clear waters and live your scuba diving and snorkeling adventures. The underwater world of the island hides really extraordinary and enchanting images. Caves of unique beauty, reefs full of different kinds of water plants and the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea form a magnificent diving destination.
Folegandros over the steep cliffs and the rocky extent, features trails and paths, that attract travelers and hikers from all over the world.
